Character Development
This class will meet on the first, second, and third Wednesdays of the month during homeroom. During the first semester each student will be given an abstract verse (monthly) from the book of Proverbs to memorize and create a project to present to the class. The project should explain what the verse means to him/her. During the second semester, sixth graders will study great Godly people of our past and their characteristics from the Torchlighters Collection. The seventh and eighth grade classes will conduct group discussions/investigations from the book: The Fallacy Detective: Thirty-Six Lessons on How to Recognize Bad Reasoning by: Nathaniel and Hans Bluedorn. This is a beginning look at logic or "critical thinking" from a Christian perspective.
Service Projects
The fourth and fifth Wednesdays of the month will be spent creating service projects to complete in homeroom. These may include local as well as distant organizations and individuals in need. Once per semester we will have an optional service project to complete outside of class time. Once a month we will have a pizza lunch for $3.50 to raise money for this class. Box Top collections will help as well.
Electives
Each student will choose one elective from Elective #1 AND one elective from Elective #2 each semester. Elective choices are based on a first-come, first-served basis (according to order of enrollment).
*A note to those who are reluctant writers: A couple of the electives will contain writing. The writing process will be emphasized versus the mechanics of spelling and grammar. The goal is to express yourself in a logical way that will captivate your audience. Be encouraged to sign-up for one of these electives, and you may just find out how much you actually love writing!
